A giant with a mean disposition lived high on Cadillac Mountain. Late one night when he was trying to sleep his four pet porcupines were screeching and hollering. Enraged, the giant chased them down the mountain, where they leaped into the bay trying to escape him. But they couldn’t swim, and were afraid to come back to shore where the giant could reach them. A gentle mermaid watching their predicament protected them by turning the porcupines into islands, and there they are to this day:
Sheep Porcupine,
Burnt Porcupine,
Long Porcupine,
and Bald Porcupine. |
