MBMI Examines Success After Year of Explosive Growth

In Spring 2011, MBMI tackled the serious problem of roofs collapsing due to intense snowfall. TGTE Urges Visiting Emir of Qatar to Address Mass Killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) today urged visiting Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani to address the mass killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Emir of Qatar was instrumental in preventing mass killing in Libya.

?Late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was a dear friend of the same Sri Lankan President whom you are meeting and this Sri Lankan President tried to prevent your initiatives against killings in Libya,? said a TGTE spokesperson.

?It is your leadership that was instrumental in creating an International Commission of Inquiry on Libya at the UN Human Rights Council. We urge you to take the same position by supporting a Commission of Inquiry on Sri Lanka at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council session in March 2012,? said the spokesperson.

?During your State visit to Sri Lanka, you will never be able to hear the pain and suffering of Tamils, due to intense crackdown on Tamils. You will only see the guard of honor of the same Sri Lankan forces that committed mass killing of Tamils,? continued the spokesperson.

UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon appointed a Panel of Experts to submit a report on the killings in Sri Lanka and this Panel submitted its report in March 2011.

According to this UN Panel report, over 40,000 Tamils were killed in five months, due to carpet bombing of civilian targets and repeated shelling of hospitals and food distribution centers.

The report further noted that, due to government restriction of food and medicine, several died of starvation and many injured were bled to death. Women were sexually assaulted and raped. Some elements of these abuses could amount to genocide.

UN Secretary General referred this UN Panel report to the UN Human Rights Council to take action. TGTE appealed to Emir of Qatar to support a Commission of Inquiry during the upcoming session of UN Human Rights Council in March.

TGTE noted that, even after the war ended in May 2009, abuses like abductions, rape, killings and disappearances are still continuing and urged the visiting Emir of Qatar to raise these abuses with the President of Sri Lanka and demand it be stopped.

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) is a democratically elected government of Tamils from the island of Sri Lanka. It held international supervised elections in twelve countries to elect Members of Parliament (MPs). These MPs ratified a Constitution, elected a Prime Minister, ten member Cabinet and a Speaker.

This prestigious travelling exhibition will be on display from January 27 ? March, 23, 2012; Monday ? Thursday: 9:00 a.m. ? 8:00 p.m.; Friday: 9:00 a.m. ? 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday: 2 ? 4 p.m. at the Grillo Gallery, Center for the Arts, Endicott College, 376 Hale Street, Beverly. The reception and lecture presentation for this exhibit will be held on Tuesday, March 6, with the reception starting at 5:00 p.m. and the lecture/presentation by world renowned public artist Caleb Neelon titled: ?Forgiveness is Easier Than Permission? will follow at 7:00 p.m. The reception, lecture/presentation and exhibition are free and open to the public.

The AIGA BoNE Show is a biennial design competition and celebration of New England design. This prestigious, nationally recognized competition was open to all design professionals, educators, and students currently practicing in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, and was judged by Jon Kolko, Principal Designer at Frog Design; Bobby C. Martin, Jr., a founding partner of The Original Champions of Design, New York City; and Ann Willoughby, President and Creative Director of Willoughby Design Group, Kansas City, Missouri. In response to the theme, Wicked Problems ? Wicked Solutions, participants created works based on challenging design problems and how they creatively solved them. The winning designs that comprise the BoNE exhibition at Endicott College, include examples of branding, handmade books, journal concept design, illustration, public space transformation, visible language, corporate websites, a motion capture machine, and a president?s report.

Founded in 1914 as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, AIGA remains the oldest and largest professional membership organization for professional designers and is now known simply as ?AIGA, the professional association for design.? AIGA represents a variety of professions under the umbrella of communication design, ranging from book and type design to interactive design and experience design. They also support design professionals, educators and students throughout their careers. AIGA has approximately 66 Chapters and more than 22,000 members throughout the United States.

Endicott College?s award-winning design students have an active student AIGA chapter.

Sanford Farrier, Chair of Visual Communications states, ?Annually the group members design and produce EnSight, an entirely student-driven magazine with a current circulation of 2000. EnSight gives the student designers an opportunity to experiment graphically within the context of a printed publication while, at the same time, engaging them in the demands of the production and printing processes.?

According to Kathleen Moore, Coordinator of Visual Arts, ?This is the second time we have hosted the impressive BoNE show. It provides the students and general public an opportunity to see how design professionals have used their imagination to work through tough design problems; and in turn our students can apply some of these strategies within their own designs.? Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, with Largest Piles Ever Driven, is Giant Leap in Construction Innovation, and US-Chinese Trade

72′ piles, driven with American Piledriving Equipment’s giant eight-hammer piledriver called The Octakong, for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Seaway project, are the largest piles ever driven. These 72′ diameter steel piles, and the equipment that install them, enable an acceleration in cofferdam and seawall construction that paves the way for land reclamation and sea-bound construction across the globe.

The two enclosed sea-bound walls are to form bulkheads for two artificial islands under construction for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Seaway project due to be finished 2016.

The two islands will form transition structures between the project?s 4.2 mile tunnel section, built to allow deep water ship access to the Pearl River Delta from the South China Sea, and three cable-stayed bridge spans linking Hong Kong in the east to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai to the west.

The artificial islands? seawalls each comprise 60 individual adjoining cells, each adjoined by wingwalls, in order to form to perimeter of the island. Traditional construction methods of the bulkheads would have taken years, with each cell having to be fabricated individually by driving one interlocking sheet pile at a time to form each cell, and each cell constructed to adjoin the next until the island wall perimeter was closed. A construction method driving the cells as individual massive steel piles had never been tried on this scale in these conditions. The pile driving equipment capable to supply the force to drive the piles was conceived of, but not yet constructed.

Allnamics Pile Testing Experts of the Netherlands helped convince Chinese contractor First Harbor Marine Group China that a massive multi-vibro hammer can be used to drive 130′ long, 72′ diameter steel pipe piles weighing 600 metric tons each into the sea bed of the South China Sea to the required depth.

By using the innovative Octakong pile driver to drive the 72′ diameter piles, the construction schedule was reduced to less than 7 months.

Specially designed, engineered and manufactured for the project by American Piledriving Equipment, Inc. (APE) of Kent, Washington, the Octakong consists of eight synchronized vibratory pile drivers powered by eight CAT 1200 HP engines in order to drive each 72′ steel pile, saving an immense amount of time.

Commenting on the project, APE President, John White said ?The completion of the circumference of each island?s wall marks major advancements in the field of sea-bound construction, land reclamation technology and pile driving ? at 72? these are the largest diameter steel piles ever installed.?
